Being the center of attention in Potatoes, Papaw, and Me and What Farm Boots are For was just not enough for Junebug, the young girl character with the fiery red hair. Of course, Junebug is not named in either story and maybe that is why she keeps sneaking into my other books. I first noticed her sneakiness when she joined the kids sledding down the snowy hill in Sled Ride Down Unrue Street. There she was right in the middle of the page, racing the other kids on her sled down the hill. She did seem to fit very nicely on the page with the other kids as they enjoyed the adventure of a fast-paced sled ride on a snowy winter night.
More recently, Junebug found the pages of my new release, A Patient Hunter: The Alligator Snapping Turtle. This book is all about an alligator snapping turtle and his unique way of capturing his food. It’s the first in a nature series I am writing. Still, Junebug found a way to sneak right onto the pages - and the first page of the story no less. There she is fishing at the edge of the very pond where the story is set. This time she brought her dad and brother along. Then, to really show her determination, she is shown walking away as the story closes and the sun is setting on the last page of the story. At least, the alligator snapping turtle gets some attention on these pages as he looks on.
Will Junebug continue to sneak into the pages of future books? What about the next book that is with Hiruni being illustrated, Tag! You’re It? We’ll just have to wait a few months to find out. LOL
